Ronald Araujo set to sign new Barcelona deal; Pedri in contract extension talks

Ronald Araujo is set to sign a new six-and-a-half-year deal with Barcelona, while the club are negotiating with Pedri over extending his contract.

Araujo’s existing deal had been due to expire in 2026 and he attracted interest from Juventus in January as his contract talks stalled, but he is now set to sign a new deal through to 2031.

The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet Barcelona had convinced the 25-year-old to stay following discussions with head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco.

Araujo’s new contract does not rule out his departure in the coming seasons, with a consensus on both sides of the negotiation that the club would consider a proposal that would represent a good deal for both parties.

The Uruguayan international’s preference, should he leave Barcelona, would be to play in England’s Premier League.

Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018 in a deal rising to around €5million and has made 155 appearances for the club, winning La Liga in 2022 and the Copa del Rey in 2021.

The Uruguay international missed the first half of the campaign after sustaining a hamstring injury at last summer’s Copa America. He returned to action in January and has made five appearances in all competitions this season.

Araujo’s contract extension fits into Deco’s plan to assess all contract situations with players who have less than 18 months remaining on their deals. Barca do not want any players in their first-team squad next season who are into the final year of their contracts, without having extended.

This list includes Frenkie de Jong, Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia, alongside midfield duo Gavi and Pedri — the latter two are in talks over extending their deals, with conversations with 22-year-old Pedri progressing well and on track for a long-term commitment.

The Spain international midfielder has scored 24 goals in 174 appearances for Barca.
