Air Force is expected to reaffirm its commitment to the Mountain West today, a source briefed on the decision confirmed to The Athletic, as the Group of 5 ripples continue from the Pac-12’s addition of four Mountain West schools earlier this month. Yahoo Sports first reported the academy’s decision.
The American Athletic Conference had targeted Air Force and UNLV from the shrinking Mountain West as potential expansion candidates, in addition to Texas State from the Sun Belt. The Pac-12 was also considering Air Force, along with additional Mountain West schools like UNLV and Utah State.
The AAC includes Army and Navy as football-only members. Air Force would have given the conference all three service academies playing FBS football.
Earlier on Monday, Memphis, Tulane, South Florida and UTSA reaffirmed their commitment to the AAC in the wake of interest from the Pac-12, the universities and conference announced Monday.
