Borussia Dortmund have reached the semi-final stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2013 after a thrilling 5-4 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid.

Edin Terzic’s side had trailed 2-1 from the first leg in Madrid, but scored twice in quick succession on two occasions in a pulsating return leg in Dortmund to seal their progress.

Julian Brandt fired Dortmund into the lead in the 34th minute before Ian Maatsen, on loan at the German club from Chelsea, doubled their lead on the night and gave them an aggregate lead five minutes later.

Atletico Madrid levelled the tie four minutes after half-time as Dortmund defender Mats Hummels inadvertently sliced the ball into his own goal.

Diego Simeone’s side went ahead on aggregate 15 minutes later when Angel Correa gave them the lead, but Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug headed in seven minutes later to make it 3-2 to the hosts.

Three minutes later, Marcel Sabitzer pounced on a loose ball inside Atletico’s penalty area and found the net with a fierce finish.
