Kai Havertz in Arsenal team training ahead of Newcastle game; Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard also present

Kai Havertz was present in Arsenal team training on Wednesday ahead of the club’s home game against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard were also present in the session, which took place at the Emirates Stadium in front of supporters instead of their usual London Colney base.

Havertz has been out of action since sustaining a hamstring injury that required surgery in February. It was initially thought that the 25-year-old would miss the remainder of the season but could still play a part for Arsenal before their season ends.

Rice, 26, missed Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with a hamstring injury, while Trossard, 30, also was forced off at Anfield clutching his left hamstring.  Jorginho also returned to training on Wednesday after missing Sunday’s draw with Liverpool. However, Jurrien Timber, who was an unused substitute at Anfield, was not present in the on-field session.

Arsenal head into Sunday’s game at the Emirates two points above Newcastle, who they have lost to three times this season — once in the league at St. James’ Park and twice in the two legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Havertz’s return to training is a timely one as Mikel Merino, who has been deputising as a makeshift centre-forward in his absence, is suspended for Saturday’s game after being sent off against Liverpool.

With fellow striker Gabriel Jesus also out with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, Gabriel Martinelli was deployed through the middle at times last Sunday and scored Arsenal’s first goal of the game, his tenth in all competitions this campaign.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is expected to give an update on the condition of his squad at his pre-Newcastle news conference on Friday. Following the Newcastle game, Arsenal end their season with a trip to already-relegated Southampton on May 25.
