Phil Foden to rejoin England Euro 2024 squad after birth of third child

Phil Foden is set to rejoin England’s European Championship squad after flying back to the UK for the birth of his third child.

The Football Association (FA) announced on Wednesday that the Manchester City player was returning home because of a “pressing family matter” but that his absence would only be “temporary”.

He is now travelling back to Germany and is set to join back up the squad and train on Friday ahead of the last 16 game with Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

Foden — capped 37 times by England to date — has started all three of his country’s games so far.

Luke Shaw, who has not played since February, continued full training on Thursday while Anthony Gordon also took part despite grazing his chin after falling off a bicycle.

Declan Rice and Kieran Trippier were the two England players who did not participate in the session, instead following individual programmes.

Rice and Trippier’s workloads are being managed after a busy run of games.

England finished top of Group C, winning one game — against Serbia — before two draws with Denmark and Slovenia.
