What Is Hollywood Western Style? Breaking Down the Dress Code for GQ’s Men of the Year Party 2024

Next week, on November 14, GQ is throwing the latest and greatest edition of our blockbuster Men of the Year party in Los Angeles. Given all the megawatt star power on the guestlist, you can expect the red carpet fashion to be absolutely dialed. And the official dress code, in keeping with the night’s American Rodeo theme, is a look we’re calling Hollywood Western.

But what, pray tell, does that even mean? It means tapping into the daring spirit of the Old West, only supercharging it with the glamor and flash of Old Hollywood. It’s a brash and elevated approach to the Cowboycore trend that’s swept the globe this year, cropping up on the racks of beloved mall brands and the runways of Parisian fashion houses alike. It’s Beyoncé in her Cowboy Carter era, the Flying Burrito Brothers in their Nudie suits, Orville Peck at his audacious best, and Dwight Yoakam always. It’s Clint Eastwood in Bronco Billy, but not Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. It’s Steven Yeun on the cover of GQ and Ralph Lauren on his ranch. It’s everything Manuel Cuevas has ever made.

In other words: It’s about embracing the fantasy of the frontier. So if you were blessed enough to receive an invite to next Thursday’s shindig, break out your boldest boots, toss on your tallest ten-gallon, and make sure you’re shining with all the splendor of a rhinestone-laden Elvis jumpsuit. Normally, the Men of the Year party calls for suits—not tuxes—but this go-round, you’re encouraged to break up your two-piece with a snap-front shirt, bootcut jeans, and maybe even a bolo tie. And if you weren’t one of the lucky few to make the list, have no fear: You can still follow along with all the action via our first-ever GQ Men of the Year Party livestream on GQ.com or GQ’s YouTube channel on November 14 at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Yee—and we cannot stress this enough—haw.
